Philanthropy: Employees Choice Award Recipient, March 2014

18 March 2014

MDT Philanthropy ANZ_spotlightMedtronic recognises the important role charitable organisations play within our community, as well as the role companies and members of the community play in support of them.

Medtronic Australasia directs its charitable efforts towards; Health (Expanding access to quality healthcare with a focus on and addressing prevention, diagnosis and management) and; Community and Education (Responding to local community needs with particular emphasis on programs that support human services and education in disadvantaged communities).

In addition to support of these programs, Medtronic are proud to assist those charities of importance to our employees. Each month, an Employees Choice Award winner is selected from a pool of employee nominations and provided with a $500 grant to help support their contributions to the community.

Launched in May 2013, previous recipients include: Cancer Council, Bear Cottage, RSPCA, Stroke Foundation, National Breast Cancer Foundation, The Rocket Ride, RED DUST Role Models, Movember, Love Your Sister and Dreams 2 Live 4.

The recipient of the Medtronic Employees Choice Award for March 2014 is: The Ponds Special School, as nominated by our employee in Finance and Operations, Nicholas.

According to the school’s Principal Ms Donaldson, “The Ponds School is a newly established school for students with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities. Many of our students have additional disabilities including autism, physical or sensory disabilities and/or emotional disturbance. The school is situated on a temporary site on the grounds of Riverstone High School. In 2015 the school will move to new, purpose-built premises catering for 16 classes from Kindergarten to Year 12, located in the suburb of The Ponds.

The focus of our educational programs give our students independence in all facets of their life, through the key learning areas focusing on communication, literacy, numeracy and independent living and social skills.

Getting out and about in the community enables our students to access hydrotherapy, swim school and gym programs, participate in sport, go on excursions and learn life skills such as playing in a playground and shopping. During 2012 and 2013, The Ponds School community raised enough money to purchase a bus. Our bus has been ordered and we await its arrival. As with all vehicles there are ongoing costs for services, insurance and petrol. Our school community is trying to raise the funds needed to keep the wheels of our bus turning.

The generosity of Medtronic through this grant will help us to continue to ensure the very best educational outcomes for each and every one of the students here at The Ponds School.
