New diabetes system fosters holistic view of diabetes management

19 July 2012

An innovative new system which wirelessly and automatically transmits blood glucose readings from the CONTOUR® LINK Blood Glucose Meter (by Bayer) to a compatible Medtronic insulin pump or Continuous Glucose Monitoring system* as well as Medtronic CareLink® software**, is expected to provide easier, faster blood glucose management for Australians living with type 1 diabetes.

The joint initiative provides timely and accurate blood glucose information, without patients needing to manually enter readings into their devices. In addition, patients now have a unique opportunity to access just one data set, providing a holistic picture of their condition.

According to Associate Professor Neale Cohen, General Manager of Diabetes Services at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, this new offering has the potential to assist patients with the management of diabetes, while also delivering significant benefits to physicians caring for people living with diabetes.

“Physicians regularly see discrepancies between information downloaded from the patient’s pump versus the meter. This means that if both sets of data are not reviewed simultaneously the best patient management pathway may not be followed” said Dr Cohen. “From a user perspective, this type of technology is practical and discrete; given you don’t need to handle the pump to physically punch in the numbers.”

Every pump provided by Medtronic since 8 June 2012 is now shipped with a Bayer CONTOUR® LINK meter from Bayer at no additional cost. People with a pump purchased before then, can call the Bayer helpline tollfree on 1800 289 312 (Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm AEST)to request a free meter. Strips are available from the NDSS and lancets can also be purchased through Diabetes Australia.
